Acronyms, Nicknames, & Definitions

H
HIM - Half Ironman Triathlon - An idea that is only half crazy...that's why it's called a "half" ironman.  A triathlon consisting, generally, of a 1.2 mile swim, followed by a 56 mile bike, followed by a 13.1 mile (or half mary) run.
HM - Half Mary - Half Marathon - A marathon (see below) is a race named after a legendary run after which the runner died; after a half mary, you are only half dead. 13.1 mile run.
M
Mary - Marathon - A really long race, named after the run of Pheidippides from Marathon to Athens to announce victory in battle.  According to Wikipedia, his last words before dying were either "Joy, we win" or "Joy to you."  Regardless of which translation is correct, the dude died after running...so they named a race for it.  26.2 mile run.
O
OWS - Open Water Swim - The portion of the triathlon that causes great terror to many participants, either because it's a wild mess of flailing arms and elbows along with the added bonus of fishies and seaweed or because most bodies of open water do not have a lane line down the middle like a swimming pool.  Either way, OWS is scary stuff.
